Yo La Tengo 2014 WFMU All-Request Marathon Set List

Yo La Tengo 2014 WFMU All-Request Marathon Set List
Feb 26, 2014, 9pm to 12 midnight
Co-Hosts: Evan “Funk” Davies & Gaylord Fields

As in past years, I once kept score at home again this year as Yo La Tengo performed their 18th annual all-request Marathon to raise money for WFMU.   I was selfishly pleased that--unlike last year--WFMU did not post a running playlist on Evan "Funk" Davies's regular WFMU playlist page in real time while the band was performing.  I always think that part of the fun of listening to these broadcasts is making the effort to i.d. all the songs in real time, without a safety net!  Plus, I like the glory of being the guy who keeps score at home then shares the playlist.   Which is now, once again, mine.  As always, YLT stumped me with a handful of the shout-outs and quotations, but the list below has been corrected by Ira Kaplan and Bruce Bennett and thus should now be authoritative.

Iggy & The Stooges - No Fun
NRBQ - Ridin' in My Car
Renegades/James "Dickie" Thompson/ Bill Haley & His Comets -

Thirteen Women (And Only One Man In Town)
Soft Boys - Queen of Eyes

Redbone - Come and Get Your Love
Kinks/The Jam - David Watts
Velvet Underground - What Goes On

The Clash - London Calling
Kinks - Days
Little Richard - The Girl Can't Help It
Zombies - She's Not There
Pere Ubu - Heart of Darkness

Big Star - Thirteen
Robyn Hitchcock - I Often Dream of Trains
Hollywood Argyles - Alley Oop
Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way
Neil Young/DEVO - Hey Hey My My (Human Highway Version)

(my request, co-sponsored by WAIF-FM's Eric Slade)

Paul McCartney & Wings - Live and Let Die
Johnny Rivers/DEVO - Secret Agent Man
The Byrds - I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better
Kinks - Where Have All The Good Times Gone?

         (Tara Key's request)
Question Mark & The Mysterians - 96 Tears/96 Beers

         (w/ Todd-O-Phonic Todd on vox)

Gary Lewis & The Playboys - Count Me In
Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - The Tracks of My Tears
Beat Happening - Cast A Shadow
The Records - Starry Eyes

(w/ The Great Gaylord & Evan "Funk" Davies on vox)

(w/ The Great Gaylord & Evan "Funk" Davies on vox)
Buffalo Springfield (Neil Young) - Mr. Soul
Poison - Talk Dirty To Me
Ruffles Have Ridges? (spoken word, Georgia)

Final Medley: Buffalo Springfield/Rolling Stones - Mr. Soul/Satisfaction Medley w/ Sly & The Family Stone - It's A Family Affair/ Thin Lizzy - The Cowboy Song/ Modern Lovers - Roadrunner (Once)/ Big Star - I'm In Love With A Girl/ The Saints - (I'm) Stranded/ Brian Eno - King's Lead Hat/ King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man/ Final Placement (Midland Texas) - Shine (Greg Baise's request)/ Any Elliott Smith songs/ Velvet Underground - I'm Waiting For The Man/ Hall & Oates - Abducted (w/ Therese & Small Change)/ The Clean - Getting Older/ Big Star - O My Soul/ Rush - The Spirit of Radio/ Small Faces - Tin Soldier / Sniff 'n' the Tears - Driver's Seat/ Lou Reed - Coney Island Baby/ The Frogs - I Only Play 4 Money/ Kinks - I'm Not Like Everybody Else/ Game Theory - Like A Girl Jesus/ Rush - The Spirit of Radio (reprise)/ Modern Lovers - Roadrunner (Twice)

Highlights IMHO: dBs - Black & White, Velvet Underground - What Goes On, Pere Ubu - Heart of Darkness, The Byrds - I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better, Question Mark & The Mysterians - 96 Tears/96 Beers (w/ Todd-O-Phonic Todd on vox), The Records - Starry Eyes (w/ The Great Gaylord & Evan "Funk" Davies on vox), and of course my request Neil Young/DEVO - Hey Hey My My (Human Highway Version).

Yo La Tengo 2013 WFMU All-Request Marathon Set List

As in past years, I once kept score at home again this year as Yo La Tengo performed their 17th annual all-request Marathon to raise money for WFMU.   This time out, the format was the same as usual but there were a few twists.  Notably, for the first time ever, YLT did not make it down to WFMU's Jersey City studios for the broadcast.  Instead, they performed live from Berlin, Germany--apparently from a studio associated with Calexico.   While this change was necessitated by the band's presence in Germany this week, unbelievably YLT's auxilliary WFMU-Marathon member Bruce Bennett (who was *not* touring with the band in Germany) flew across the pond just to make this performance.   Another difference this year--related to the first--was that because the band was in Europe, this year's show aired at 9am US eastern time (on a workday), not on the traditional Friday night or Saturday.   That's okay, though:  the thousands of hours of shirking-on-the-job that took place in workplaces across the eastern USA this morning was certainly fair payback to all the rat bastard employers who exploit their overworked employees every other day of the year.

Another change this year that I selfishly did not like was that this year--for the first time ever--WFMU posted a running playlist on Faye’s regular WFMU playlist page in real time while the band was performing.  I always think that part of the fun of listening to these broadcasts is making the effort to i.d. all the songs in real time, without a safety net!  Plus, I like the glory of being the guy who keeps score at home, then shares the playlist.   But since not even Gaylord Fields was bold enough to attempt to i.d. the songs that YLT played during this year's action-packed closing medley, I hope my playlist (below) nonetheless adds some value.   As always, YLT stumped me with a few of the shout-outs and quotations, so the list below includes a few guesses or fragments of things I thought I heard. I would welcome any corrections or omissions!
